Presentations

I am a keen science communicator and I believe that all scientists should try and explain their research to the general public. I have given presentations about my current PhD research as well as other topics earlier in my academic career, including space exploration and mathematics.

Three Minute Thesis

I won the University of Edinburgh’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition in June 2025. The 3MT competition is a science communication competition for PhD students. With three minutes and one static PowerPoint slide, the aim is to communicate your PhD research as clearly as possible to a non-specialist audience. You can watch my speech on The University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Academic Development’s website here and you can watch the full final here.

Paasisavut

I was a finalist in the Paasisavut competition in November 2024. This is a science communication competition for PhD students researching Greenland. I gave a five-minute presentation explaining my PhD research to the general public on stage in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The competition was also broadcast live on Greenlandic TV. My presentation included a prop I had designed to explain how glacial melting impacts fjord circulation. I wrote a blog post for the CryoExchange newsletter about my experience participating in the competition.

In the run up to Paasisavut, all of the finalists also filmed a video with Q’s Greenland, Greenland’s most popular content-creator.

TEDxYouth Talk

During my Master’s studies in Astrophysics, I gave a TEDxYouth talk in November 2020 on The Future of Space Exploration.

Tom Rocks Maths

During my undergraduate studies in Physics, I did a mathematics communication internship in July 2020 with Dr Tom Crawford at The University of Oxford. During this internship, I designed, scripted, filmed and edited five short educational videos explaining Pascal’s Triangle. You can explore the Tom Rocks Maths website for parts one, two, three, four and five.
